How to install Vuze (Azureus) on Ubuntu 9.10 by terminal

Vuze, also known as Azureus, is a BitTorrent client used to transfer files via the BitTorrent protocol. Vuze is written in Java, and uses the old Azureus Engine.

Before you start you might uninstall your previous version of Azureus.

1. Make sure you have sun Java 1.5 or 1.6 installed and working. To see if what your Java version is set by default type: java -version in the terminal. To install java follow this tutorial.

2.Download Azureus here or by wget in your home directory:

wget http://hwcdn01.vuze.com/files/Vuze_Installer.tar.bz2


3.Untar it:

sudo tar jxvf Vuze_Installer.tar.bz2 -C /opt/


4.Change permissions:

sudo chown -R <username>:<username> /opt/azureus/


where <username> is your ubuntu username

5.Create a shortcut on Applications->Internet:

sudo nano /usr/share/applications/Azureus.desktop


Type in the followings:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Azureus (Vuze)
Comment=P2P Client
Exec=/opt/vuze/azureus
Icon=/opt/vuze/vuze.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Network;


To uninstall Vuze type in terminal:

sudo rm -r /opt/vuze


sudo rm /usr/share/applications/Azureus.desktop


This method works only if you installed Vuze as described above.
