Install Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 on Ubuntu Server 9.10

Today i wanted to install Ubuntu desktop over the server edition.

You can install other versions of desktop environments. To see all available desktops packages:

sudo apt-cache search ubuntu-desktop

Your list should look something like this:

edubuntu-desktop - educational desktop for Ubuntu
edubuntu-desktop-kde - educational desktop for Kubuntu
kubuntu-desktop - Kubuntu desktop system
ubuntu-desktop - The Ubuntu desktop system
xubuntu-desktop - Xubuntu desktop system
lubuntu-desktop - Lubuntu Desktop environment

So, you can install edubuntu (GNOME desktop), kubuntu (KDE desktop), ubuntu (GNOME desktop), xubuntu (XFCE desktop).

We are going to install Ubuntu Desktop, but all the installations should be the same:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

All packages should be around 400Mb and the installation should take 2000Mb, so everything is around 2400Mb. So we hit "yes" when asked...

After everything was downloaded, it should unpack and install all packages (i had 911 packages) and should let you with your terminal prompt. Now let's start our new ubuntu desktop environment:

sudo startx

You should take care, because with sudo you will enter as root. After you restart Ubuntu desktop, you may login with your username and password.

To end gnome session and return to terminal (CLI):

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

But next time you reboot Ubuntu machine, you will end up in Gnome desktop.

This post was written from our new Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 installation.

I've just started reading the blog as a noob on Ubuntu administration. I suggest after installing Gnome going through and removing un-needed applications in "Ubuntu Software Center." Then run sudo apt-get autoremove. I'm happy with the gnome desktop but on a server you don't need much.
